Ingredients

  • white bread — 2 slices
  • Braeburn apple — 1 medium
  • salted butter — 25g
  • caster sugar — 2 tbsp
  • ground cinnamon — 0.5 tsp

Method

  1. 1

Core and slice the apple into thin wedges.

  2. 2

Mix the caster sugar and ground cinnamon in a small bowl.

  3. 3

Heat half of the butter in a frying pan over medium heat and toast the bread slices until golden brown on both sides. Remove and keep warm.

  4. 4

Add the remaining butter to the same pan. Once bubbling, add the apple slices.

  5. 5

Fry the apples for 3-4 minutes until softened and starting to caramelise.

  6. 6

Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar over the apples in the pan and toss gently for 1 minute until the sugar melts into a syrup.

  7. 7

Top the toasted bread with the caramelised apple slices and drizzle any remaining syrup from the pan over the top.

Why this works

The natural acidity and crunch of the apple provides a perfect contrast to the rich, salty butter, while the cinnamon-sugar glaze binds the flavours together in a comforting, aromatic finish.
